IMDEX 2025: Fassmer Unveils New OPV90 Mk II

German shipbuilder Fassmer Defence revealed their newest patrol vessel at the International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX) Asia 2025, dubbed the OPV90 Mk II.

The name alludes to the total length of the vessel exceeding 90 metres. It also refers to the evolution of this design as a further development of the 86 metre Offshore Patrol Vessel. That particular vessel is in service with the German Federal Police as the Potsdam-class.

Largest Fassmer OPV-design with robust armament

The OPV90 Mk II measures 94.9 metres in overall length. The beam measures 15.2 metres and the hull has a draft of 4 metres. The builder did not specify displacement. The Potsdam-class this new design is based on displaces 1,890 tons. Therefore the OPV90 Mk II should easily exceed 2,000 tons in displacement.

Painted in generic coast guard colours, the OPV90 Mk II features both a notably heavy gun-based armament and comprehensive sensor suite. Armament includes a Leonardo 76 mm-gun in Strales-configuration on the bow and two 30 mm remote-controlled autocannons amidships port and starboard. In conversation with Naval News, Rene Quezada, Sales Director at Fassmer Defence, emphasised that the choice of armament is not merely a matter of increased calibre. Rather, the larger ammunition enables increased flexibility for a range of applications, ranging from anti-terror scenarios to enhanced self-defence against a range of threats including drones.

Capable sensor suite and versatile modularity

The sensor suite includes a lightweight SAAB Giraffe 1X rotating AESA-radar. The Giraffe 1X is optimised for very short range (VSHORAD)-engagements against surface and airborne targets. SAAB in particular highlights the sensor’s performance against very compact targets such as UAVs. Other sensors include a Stir fire control radar above the bridge and two navigation radars.

A particular feature of the design is enhanced modularity via four 20-foot-ISO containers. The vessel carries these in a bay immediately ahead of the helicopter landing deck. The OPV90 Mk II can embark further modular mission containers internally. This feature may support a variety of applications including the operation of ROVs.

Below the aviation landing deck capable of supporting and refueling a 12 ton-helicopter is a dual RHIB-launch bay. The layout is similar to the Potsdam-class OPV. Propulsion includes diesel engines for a top speed of 24 knots and dual bow thrusters for enhanced mobility. Finally, the OPV90 Mk II carries distinct strakes mounted on the forward hull. Queried by Naval News, Quezada characterizes this feature as collision protection for physical challenges in contested waters.

New design on order with undisclosed customer

Fassmer confirmed with Naval News that the company is producing the OPV90 Mk II-design for an undisclosed customer. In this context, and considering the background of the presentation at IMDEX Asia 2025, it is worth noting that Singapore had placed an order for four OPV based on the Potsdam-class back in 2023.

Singapore Navy commissions the remaining two Sentinel-class vessels
Singapore in 2021 and 2022 inducted four former Fearless-class patrol boats as the refurbished Sentinel-class into a new Maritime Security & Response Flotilla (MSRF). Four new OPVs on order will replace these vessels from 2028 (RSN photo).

The first two hulls for that order are currently under construction at the BLRT Western Shipyard in Klapeida, Lithuania. The aforementioned distinct hull-bracing on the OPV90 Mk II echoes features on vessels of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). This notably includes the Littoral Mission Vessels (LMV) of the Independence-class. Singapore expects the first vessel of that order to be operational by 2028.
