Vertiq has created a new velocity-based pulsing firmware release, version 0.2.0, for its 23-06 and 23-14 modules, now available for customer evaluation.
This firmware release introduces the Advanced Arming feature to pulsing modules, as well as an important bugfix that avoids motor runaway under certain conditions.
The update is specifically for only the Vertiq 23-06 2200Kv and Vertiq 23-14 920Kv modules with use of Vertiq’s underactuated propellers.
Deciding when to update a module’s firmware can be challenging, as the benefits of an upgrade and its potential impact on existing functionality may not always be clear. This post provides an overview of the latest firmware update, outlining the new features introduced and any modifications to existing functionality.
The introduction of Advanced Arming means that when a module is controlled via IFCI, it must first enter the armed state before it can begin spinning. In this mode, arming on throttle is enabled and disarming on throttle is disabled by default.
Along with arming, the firmware update also introduces Stop Detection. Stop detection is used to ensure that a module has come to a stop before completing its disarming or timeout behavior.
In previous firmware versions, a communication timeout always caused the module to enter a disarmed state. The new release allows for a third time ending behavior, allowing the module to execute its standard timeout procedure while remaining armed. This feature is particularly beneficial during temporary in-flight communication losses, as the module will resume spinning immediately once communication is restored, without needing to rearm.
In previous versions of velocity based pulsing, it was possible for the module to run away to high velocities under certain very uncommon conditions. This firmware update addresses the issue, ensuring the module can no longer run away unexpectedly.
The release is entirely separate from Vertiq’s recent speed firmware v0.2.1 update.
