The latest technologies, such as AI, neutral networks, and deep learning, are now of great importance regarding minerals exploration. But human field work remains essential. This was the consensus in a panel discussion on Thursday, the final day of the 2026 Investing in African Mining Indaba, being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. “Data is key, even if we are going to be using AI,” affirmed Falcon Metal Resources Africa chief exploration officer Khumoetsile Dikupa. “You need more, standardised, data to feed into the AI. You need input from the ‘boots-on-the-ground’. We’re using AI 40%, and 60% goes to boots-on-the-ground, to experience. We’re still having that fear: what the AI is telling us — is it really [so] on the ground?”
