Healthcare Quality and Equity Through Data Exchange at MedAllies

When MedAllies was founded in 2001, the healthcare landscape looked vastly different from what it does today. Long before the HITECH Act spurred the widespread digitization of medical records, the company set out with an ambitious goal: using technology to enhance healthcare quality. Today, as a Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) at the forefront of implementing the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), MedAllies is poised to significantly expand its reach through its integration with Centauri Health Solutions.

In a recent video interview, Dr. A. John Blair III, Founder and CEO of MedAllies, shared insights on the dramatic advances in healthcare interoperability across the United States and what’s coming next.

Blair traces MedAllies’ interoperability work directly back to its founding mission of improving healthcare quality. The pursuit of interoperability drove the company’s evolution and Blair’s extensive collaboration with CMS, the Department of HHS, and the ONC to build data exchange infrastructure nationwide. MedAllies now operates several networks and has incorporated six service providers into its QHIN, creating pathways for seamless information sharing across the healthcare ecosystem.

The momentum driving interoperability is building rapidly. Blair points to increased federal commitment and investment in data exchange, predicting that the pace of change over the next year will triple compared to 2024. The progress achieved in clinical settings is now expanding to other sectors, including the Social Security Administration.

Payers represent the next frontier. Blair anticipates CMS launching pilot programs with payers soon. The challenge is that payers already demand data for reimbursement, so they may not immediately see TEFCA’s value. Blair believes the key is demonstrating how TEFCA delivers data more efficiently while also improving its breadth and quality. Beyond payers, he hopes to eventually bring public health agencies into the network.

The integration of MedAllies into Centauri Health Solutions reflects a strategic move to accelerate impact. Blair emphasizes that cultural alignment made the difference: “We liked the culture and people at Centauri,” he notes. The acquisition provides MedAllies with the resources and scale of a much larger organization, including established relationships with payers that will be crucial for expanding into that sector while staying true to its original mission.

Blair remains focused on his original goals of improving care and health equity. He acknowledges there is significant work ahead on making data actionable within clinicians’ workflows, but sees this as the path to measurable quality improvements. Equally important is reducing administrative burden on providers. “We want to make it more pleasant to take care of patients,” Blair says.

Blair sees TEFCA as particularly promising for addressing healthcare disparities. He views it as essential infrastructure for closing the interoperability gap between well-resourced and under-resourced providers, and between urban and rural hospitals. When smaller practices and rural facilities can access the same quality of data exchange as major health systems, equity improves across the board.
