Light-induced symmetry changes in tiny crystals allow researchers to create materials with tailored properties

Think of constructing a Lego tower with completely straightened blocks. Each block stands for an atom in a small crystal, called a quantum dot. Similar to bumping the tower can change the blocks and transform its framework, outside pressures can change the atoms in a quantum dot, damaging its proportion and influencing its residential properties.
