Biotelemetry is an important tool for monitoring animals under natural conditions. Wildlife tracking benefited from the use of the very high frequency (VHF) tracking units in the early 1960 s [1,2] where researchers would track radio signals either on the ground or through aerial surveys. By the early 1990 s, researchers were using global positioning system (GPS) based telemetry systems to monitor fine-scale movement of wildlife [3]. The recent rise in open-source technology, such as the Arduino hardware and software platform [4], has led to a rapid increase in the design, development, and deployment of newer, smaller tracking technologies [5].
