Managing Competing Government Data Requirements and Best Practices to Balance Sharing with Protection

The desire for healthcare data has never been greater.  This is true for healthcare organizations that want legitimate access to data.  Hackers that want to breach healthcare data.  Startups that want appropriate access to data and some who want to push the envelope of what data should be shared.  Patients who want access to their health data.  And everything in between.  Plus, there’s a complex maze of national and state laws which govern when and how healthcare data can and should be shared.

One of the companies we’ve talked to over the years about ROI (Release of Information) and health data sharing is MRO.  They’ve had decades of experience managing when and how health data should be shared.  While at the AHIMA conference, I had a chance to dive deeper into this topic with MRO’s Chief Product Officer, Mo Weitnauer.

We start off our interview with asking Weitnauer about what’s required to reconcile the competing requirements of government regulations (CURES Act, Interoperability Regulations, HIPAA, etc).  She highlights that what makes this even more challenging is that every state has unique regulations that often differ from the federal requirements.  Plus, they’re changing all the time.  Keeping up with these regulations and requirements is a full time job.  Weitnauer and I also talk about open access to EHRs which solves a small portion of the problem, but why there are plenty of other use cases that aren’t solved by just giving access to EHR data.

Weitnauer also shares with us what MRO has learned when it comes to aggregating healthcare data for organizations.  She shares some of the ways that healthcare organizations get it wrong when aggregating data and what needs to be done to avoid these pitfalls.  Plus, Weitnauer shares some of the best practices for how providers and payers can balance sharing with protection.  At times those things are at odds and that is why it requires an expert to be able to share data effectively while maintaining privacy.

Check out our interview with Mo Weitnauer from MRO to learn what it takes to share data effectively in healthcare while still maintaining privacy and security.
