
I lately had the satisfaction of talking to Laurie Spiegel for the website. As prep work for the meeting, I invested a great deal of time over the last number of weeks taking another look at Spiegel’s documents, most especially The Expanding Universe, her 1980 work of art that mixes synth experimentalism with very early instances of what would become called ambient music, and mathematical structure strategies. It’s a wonder that seems both sentimental and innovative at the very same time.
